A shipbuilding gantry crane is a rail-mounted portal structure specifically engineered to lift and position ship blocks, hull sections, and heavy marine components during vessel construction or drydock maintenance. Unlike standard industrial gantry cranes, a shipbuilding variant operates at working grades M7–M8 (ISO 4301), meaning it handles frequent, heavy, and shock-inducing load cycles without fatigue failure.
Structurally, the crane consists of two vertical legs, a horizontal main girder spanning the construction berth or drydock, a hoisting trolley, and a rail-mounted travel system. Because shipyard berths can extend beyond 180 m, the span range of 20–200 m is a defining capability. Moreover, the 28–76 m lifting height accommodates both shallow and deep drydock configurations.

Dafang's shipbuilding gantry crane reaches 3,000 ton maximum lifting capacity. However, most commercial shipyard block lifts fall between 300 and 1,500 ton. Capacity selection depends on the maximum block weight, dynamic load factor, and the required safety factor per FEM 1.001.
A master-slave PLC system links two cranes on a shared communication bus. The master crane transmits real-time position and load data; the slave adjusts its speed to maintain synchronisation within ±5 mm. As a result, rigid blocks lift without induced bending stress that could distort hull geometry.
ISO 4301 grade M8 applies to continuous drydock and active shipbuilding duty. M8 denotes very heavy utilisation — over 50% of operating time under full or near-full load. Therefore, Dafang specifies M8 structural steel members, M8-rated wire ropes, and drum/sheave ratios matching this duty class.
Yes, with the storm-lock system engaged. Dafang's storm-lock braking, rail clamps, and anchoring devices hold the crane stationary in winds up to 55 m/s, complying with GB/T 3811. Moreover, anemometers trigger automatic slow-down at 20 m/s and full stop at 28 m/s during lifting operations.
Span is fixed at manufacture based on the berth geometry. However, Dafang's engineering team works with clients during the project definition phase to optimise the span within the 20–200 m range, accounting for future berth expansion plans where applicable.
